Australia’s safest city and the fifth most populous, Adelaide is a fine choice for New Zealanders looking to move across the ditch. It has a number of gorgeous beaches and great suburban life to enjoy, with easy commutes and great weather.

It’s easy to move to Adelaide as a Kiwi – Your Visa options

One of the things that makes Australia so attractive for Kiwis is the visa situation. The close bonds and cultural and civic similarities mean that as far as moving countries goes, the shift from NZ to AUS is about as seamless as it can get.

Kiwis are entitled to a visa that they are given on arrival, called the Special Category Visa, or SCV. With this visa, you can live, work, study or even retire to Australia – and there is no limit on how long you choose to stay. You also get to take advantage of many benefits that Australian citizens and Permanent Residents have. However, the SCV does not entitle you to Permanent Residency and is, in fact, a temporary and unprotected category of visa.

If your skill set, education and/or work experience falls under the desirable and in-demand skill shortage list in Australia, then you could look at applying for a Skilled Independent Visa or Skilled Workers Visa, rather than coming into the country on the SCV. If you are moving to Adelaide with the intention of working and staying in Aussie permanently, being on the highly desirable list and counted as a skilled worker may mean permanent residency and all the benefits that brings is a good option. When you are registered for the Skilled Independent Visa (you have to meet the requirements and have skills that match jobs that are highly in demand in Australia) your application for permanent residency gets fast tracked. Register yourself with the Aussie Skill Select Database, and see how you stack up to get your PR faster, since it is a points based system.

Adelaide is an easy city to make your home

For New Zealanders who are used to a laid back pace and quieter lifestyle than the big Australian cities like Sydney, Adelaide is the perfect choice. It is comparatively easy to get around and settle into. Whether you choose to own a car and drive around, or prefer to use public transportation, you will have an easy commute in Adelaide, which is said to be traffic jam free. As the capital city of South Australia, it has a lot to offer potential residents while maintaining a smaller city vibe. There are also certain industries which are well funded and backed, so if your experience or degree is in those fields, Adelaide will have good work and career opportunities for you.

Getting set up to work in Adelaide

In order to start working and get a pay check, you will be required to open a bank account and get yourself a Tax File Number or TFN from the Australian Taxation Office. Like your IRD number in NZ, the TFN is needed so that your employee taxes can be paid by the company/firm you work for, to the Australian tax department. While you can set up your new bank account while you’re still in New Zealand and transfer funds into it too, you can only apply for your TFN once you have come to Adelaide. This is something that you should do as a priority when you arrive and start working, since those without a TFN number have to pay taxes at a higher rate.

Laws are in place governing fair wage, overtime and allowances and are applicable to everyone working and living in the country.  As per Australia’s National Employment Standards (NES) all employees are eligible for leave (annual, sick, casual). Go to this Government of Australia site to learn more about leave and wage policies in the country.

Finding a job in Adelaide

The interviewing and hiring process, as well as the work culture in Australia are very close to what you will be used to as a Kiwi. Many jobs are advertised online, and the web is definitely a great place to start your search for employment. Don’t wait until you have made the move to Adelaide, but start looking at websites such as www.seek.com.au today. If you are lucky, you can have a job in hand before you arrive. Keep your options open and be willing to take on a temporary position too, just to enable you to move over and start getting an income. With a much smaller city feel and mentality than Sydney or Melbourne, word of mouth and face to face interactions go a long way in Adelaide. Do keep in mind that low skill jobs are not that easy to come by.

The government has identified that high tech and speciality fields like medical research, bio science and information and communications technology (ICT) offer good opportunities. The other top industries in Adelaide include automotive parts manufacturing, engineering and tourism. An upcoming industry is ship and sub building, which is expected to grow in the coming years. Aerospace, aviation and defence jobs are also available but do note that these are only available to permanent residents and citizens of the country. Clean technologies, water management as well as minerals and energy are other growing fields where specialised skills are sought after. And with South Australia being the country’s largest wine producing state, creating over 65% of Australia’s wine exports, Adelaide is a great place to be if viticulture or other wine related topics is your forte. If you are in the IT sector, there are not as many jobs as in the bigger cities, but you can find online resources that list opportunities. The University of Adelaide is a great place to work, and if you are in the field of higher education, makes for a good choice, as does the University of South Australia.
