Shopping in Sydney

Sydney is a shopper’s paradise, with all the international brands and labels present plus trendy boutiques and popular markets. Sydney successfully mixes high fashion brands with department stores and classic Australian brands.

A good place to find emerging Australian fashion design talent is Paddington, in Sydney’s east. The Intersection, on the corner of Oxford Street and Glenmore Road, is home to local boutiques and upcoming designers. East along Oxford Street are more funky boutiques and the Paddington Markets, where many fashion designers got their start.

If bargains are your thing, one of the best ways to explore Sydney’s outlet shopping to get yourself a bargain is on a shopping tour. Tours range from half-day to full-day, with customised tours, small group tours and large group tours available.

With a tagline ‘markets over malls, fashion over fads’. The Rocks Markets are a popular drawing card with a number of local vendors selling clothing, jewellery, souvenirs and more. The markets are held on weekends from 10am until 5pm with a special food market on Fridays from 9am until 3pm.

Smack in the middle of Paddington’s famed shopping strip, Sydney’s most browse-worthy market offer a chance to pick up a unique souvenir or just while away a lazy Saturday.

Carriageworks Farmers Market has over 70 regular stallholders selling their wares at Sydney’s best farmers market. It is held in a heritage-listed railway workshop.

On Sundays, you can wile away the time searching through an eclectic mix of secondhand and vintage clothes, jewellery, candles, and crafts in the Bondi market. The market “act as a launch pad for budding entrepreneurs and creatives to bring their concepts to life.”

The magnificent Queen Victoria Building (QVB) is a late nineteenth-century building that takes up a whole block with nearly 200 shops on five levels. Located in the CBD, the building features stunning stained glass windows and, a glass roof over the central arcade, domes and other impressive architecture throughout the building. Constructed in 1891, and rivalling the QVB in ornateness, the Strand Arcade has three floors of designer fashions and is also located in the heart of the CBD.
