Know the rules around shipping your car to Australia

Due to the specific rules around car importation in Australia, there are some things to be aware of. Besides the shipping itself and its cost, you also have to understand the requirements around cleaning, marine insurance, registration and customs fees.

Shipping your car from NZ to Australia with Ausmove is easier and more cost-effective than doing everything yourself. We use the benefit of our experience and knowledge to save you time and money.

What are the car shipping requirements from NZ to Australia?

There are regulations which govern the shipping of cars to Australia.

  • You need to apply for Vehicle Import Approval (VIA).
  • The applicant for VIA must be a citizen or resident of Australia.
  • The shipper must prove they have owned the vehicle for a 12-month period or longer.
  • All vehicles imported into Australia are subject to import duty taxes and GST.

If you are applying for a personal import approval, you are only allowed to import one car and the application has to be made within six months of your arrival in Australia.

Australia, just like New Zealand, operates on strict quarantine regulations which ensure that every car shipped into the country is factory clean with no biological material or dirt found on it. On arrival, the vehicle will undergo a thorough inspection by the Department of Health to ensure it doesn't pose a health risk. You will have to pay them AU$250 to them for the quarantine inspection. It is advisable that you thoroughly vacuum the vehicle to ensure it passes inspection. In the event that it fails, you will have to pay approximately AU$595 to the department approved treatment provider for steam cleaning, after which another inspection will be conducted.

After meeting all above requirements, the car is released to the shipper. If they are not present, the car is held in bond by customs pending arrival. In line with the new international maritime regulations, the vehicle’s fuel contents are emptied, and the battery disconnected. The same goes for cars with CFC gas. They have to be degassed, decommissioned and a certificate issued for it.

What is the cost of shipping a car to Australia?

There are two main factors that influence the cost of shipping a car to Australia- the destination and the type of car being shipped. There are other factors which increase the shipping cost, such as how fast you need the car, the size of the car, which port you ship the vehicle to, and the number of cars you want to ship together.

Prices will include duty, GST, Luxury Car Tax, registration, shipping fees and any quarantine charges. The best way to get a price with some certainty is to contact us and get a detailed quote.

In the long run, selling the car may be more cost effective but that depends on many factors, including sentimental reasons, value of the car and age of the car.

Will my car be taxed if I ship it to Australia?

Cars shipped to Australia can attract different tax rates:

  • Vehicles that are up to 30 years old attract 5% import duty and 10% GST.
  • Those older than 30 years old are imported with no import duty charges and 10% GST.
  • Commercial vehicles attract the same charges as other cars (5% duty and 10% GST)
  • 33% tax is charged on luxury cars which cost over AUD 57,180.00.

You can calculate the tax on luxury cars by first calculating the GST. The Goods and Services Tax is calculated by adding up custom value, duty fees and shipping and insurance costs of getting your car into Australia. Then add that to the value of the taxable importation (VoTI). Subtract the Luxury Car Tax threshold and multiply the amount by the LCT rate. Import duty is only levied on customs value while GST is levied on the sum of the import duty, customs value and the total cost of shipping cars to Australia.

This means the import tax will vary depending on where you are shipping from and the type of car you are shipping.

How long does it take to ship a car from NZ to Australia?

Shipping from New Zealand to Australia typically takes around 30 days plus the time taken at customs. While the shipping duration might span just a month, the entire process door to door can take up to three months. It isn’t possible to specify the exact shipping times of every route, but we can give you a better idea when we give you a quote.

Shipping duration is shorter when done by air freight. For instance, shipping by air takes approximately 5-10 days or less if you are shipping from New Zealand.

The biggest influencing factor for the delay is the transit time (the time your car spends at sea heading to Australia), and this time can vary depending on the Australian sea ports the consignment is being sent to. You generally cannot influence transit time except when you air freight.

How does customs value your car?

Australian customs need to determine the value of your vehicle on arrival in order to calculate tax and customs payable. They usually do this by finding the transaction value. This uses the price paid or payable on the vehicle in order to calculate its custom value. You can calculate this by noting the amount you paid for the car in New Zealand Dollars and then converting it to AUD at the current exchange rate. The result is what is referred to as customs value.

This is the method commonly used in determining the customs value, but there are circumstances that make it impossible to implement this method. One of these circumstances is when the documents that show the amount paid for the car are not available. Another is when the shipper ships their own vehicle and cannot prove that the car was only purchased for the purpose of "exporting" to Australia.

In such cases an alternate method is used to determine the value of the vehicle, and an expert valuation determines the landed cost.

Do I need to buy car shipping insurance?

You need to get marine insurance when shipping your car. Without marine insurance, most of the risk lies with the shipper, while the shipping company has limited risk. Marine insurance should cover transport from your house to the port, including loading and unloading. Basically, you want your car to be covered from your door till it is delivered to your new home in Australia. Depending on where damage occurs, the amount payable may not be significant but it is worth insuring the transit in case the worst happens.
