Car Shipping to Australia

Due to the country's strict laws on car importation, shipping a car to Australia can be daunting. Besides the shipping itself and its cost, you also have to worry about cleaning, marine insurance, registration and customs fees. To ease the process, use of one of the tools available online to estimate the cost of shipping your car to Australia. That will help you decide if it’s worth doing.

Shipping your car to Australia can be easier and more cost effective if you hire a professional freight forwarder. If you are shipping from New Zealand, the process is less complicated than from most other countries.

Car Shipping requirements

There are regulations which govern the shipping of cars to Australia, even when the source is in New Zealand. First, you need to apply for Vehicle Import Approval. The applicant must be a citizen of Australia or a resident of Australia. It also needs to be be shown that the shipper has owned the vehicle for a 12-month period or longer. All vehicles imported are subject to import duty taxes and GST. If you are applying for a personal import approval, you are only allowed to import one car and the application has to be made within 6 months of your arrival in Australia.

Australia, just like New Zealand, operates on strict quarantine regulations which ensure that every car shipped into the country is factory clean, and no biological material or dirt can be found on it. On arrival, the vehicle will undergo a thorough inspection by the Department of Health to ensure it doesn't pose a health risk. You will have to pay AU$250 for the quarantine inspection. It is advisable that you properly vacuum the vehicle to make sure it passes the inspection. In the event that it fails, you will have to pay AU$595 for steam cleaning after which another inspection will be conducted.

After meeting every requirement, the car is released to the shipper. If he is not present, the car will be held in bond by customs pending his arrival. In line with the new international maritime regulations the vehicle’s fuel content is emptied and the battery disconnected. The same goes for cars with CFC gas. It has to be degassed and decommissioned and a certificate needs to be issued for it.

Cost of shipping a car to Australia

The destination and the type of car being shipped are the main factors influencing the cost of shipping a car to Australia. There are also other factors which determine the shipping cost, such as how fast you need the car, your budget and the number of cars you want to ship.

Car shipping to Australia is an expensive exercise, and people only resort to importing their own cars if they are worth over AU$7,000 or if they have a sentimental attachment to the cars.

If you are shipping from New Zealand then the cost of shipping can range between $2500 and $4000 depending on the size of the car. The best way to know for sure is to call and get a quote (which also covers the medium of shipment).

Shipping saloon cars is less expensive. The port your car is shipped to also determines the cost. The costliest is shipping an SUV/4x4 to the Adelaide Port which can go as high as 2516.19 AUD on a Roll-on-Roll-Off basis.

However, if the cost of buying a new car is the reason for shipping your car then you may also consider other costs you might incur while shipping. You will be without your car for about 3 months and this might be longer if there are delays. In the long run, selling the car may be more cost effective. You may also have to replace your car's fascia panel since the dual types are illegal. Your car must display Kms / hour if you intend driving it in Australia.

Cars shipped to Australia attract different tax rates. Vehicles that are up to 30 years old attract 5% import duty and 10% on GST while those above that age are imported with no import duty charges and 10% GST. Commercial vehicles attract the same charges as other cars (5% duty and 10% GST) while 33% tax is charged on luxury cars which cost over AUD 57,180.00.

You can calculate the tax on luxury cars by first calculating the GST. The Goods and Services Tax is calculated by adding up custom value, the duty, shipping and insurance costs of getting your car into Australia. Then add that to the value of the taxable importation (VoTI). Subtract the Luxury Car Tax threshold and multiply the amount by the LCT rate. Import duty is only levied on customs value while GST is levied on the sum of the import duty, customs value and the total cost of shipping cars to Australia. So the import tax will vary depending on where you are shipping from and the type of car you are shipping.

Duration of shipping

It won't be possible to specify the shipping times of every route. However, the popular ones include New Zealand, UK and US to Australia. Shipping from New Zealand to Australia takes approximately 30 days with the exception of the time taken at customs. While the shipping duration might span just a month, the entire process could take many months.

Shipping duration is shorter when done by air freight. The length of time is generally because Australia is a remote continent. For instance, shipping by air from the US takes approximately 5-10 days and shorter if you are shipping from New Zealand. Shipping from China to Australia will take 6 days.

The biggest influencing factor for the delay is the transit time (the time your car spends at sea heading to Australia), and this time can vary depending on the Australian sea ports the consignment is being sent to. You generally cannot influence transit time except when you air freight.

Customs valuation

As with every other vehicle, the Australian customs would need to determine the value of the vehicle on arrival. They do this by either finding the transaction value or through an alternate method. The former uses the price paid or payable on the vehicle in order to calculate its custom value. Say you are importing from New Zealand, you can calculate this by noting the amount you paid for the car in New Zealand Dollars and then converting it to AUD at the current exchange rate. The result is what is referred to as custom value.

It is the method commonly used in determining the custom value but there are circumstances that make it impossible to implement this method. One of these circumstances is when the documents that show the amount paid for the car are not available. Another is when the shipper ships his own vehicle and cannot prove that the car was only purchased for the purpose of "exporting" to Australia.

In such cases the alternate method is used to determine the value of the vehicle, and an expert valuation determines the landed cost.

Car shipping insurance

Get marine insurance while shipping your car as the logistics chain is long. Without marine insurance, most of the risk would lie with the shipper, while the company enjoys limited carrier's risk. Depending on where damage occurs, the amount payable may not be significant. Marine insurance covers transport from your house to the port, loading, and unloading. Basically, your car is covered from your door till it is delivered to your new home in Australia.

From shipping your car to Australia to obtaining a VIA, look for cost-effective ways to get things done and save as much money as you can.
