Sydney has many things to do to suit both the culture vulture, the sports and outdoor nature lovers.

Sydney's famous beaches such as Bondi and Manly are amongst some of the city's most popular attractions. Bondi beach is best known for its surfing but is popular for swimming and sunbathing - summer months can see the beach get quite crowded.  There are shops and fashion boutiques if you need time out of the sun.  The lesser known Coogee beach isn't as crowded and has calmer waters. There is a walk between Coogee and Bondi that offers spectacular scenery.

A bit further out of the city, Manly is also known for its surf but the rougher waters can make swimming less enjoyable.

If  you want to venture further north of the city,  Palm Beach is famous as the setting for TV soap Home & Away.

For the more culturally orientated, The Sydney Opera House will see you watching a music concert or opera performance if you want a bit of a splurge.

And there are plenty of museums to explore, too, such as the Hyde Park Barracks Museum, the Art Gallery of New South Wales - entry to this premier art institution is free, with everything from Indigenous to Asian art on display.

There is the Australian National Maritime Museum, while the Royal Botanic Gardens have everything from succulents to herbs, as well as a tropical greenhouse.  These Gardens are thought to date back to 1810.

Parks and nature

Located close to the CBD, Centennial Parklands is made up of three major urban parks covering 360 hectares, is Free to visit.  The park boasts wildlife, ponds, flowers beds, statues, as well as a selection of cafes and restaurants.  Take a walk, hire a bike, enjoy a round of golf, go horse-riding, or enjoy a picnic in the huge open green spaces.

If parks are your thing, the second-oldest national park in the world, the Royal National Park has over 100km of walking tracks through rainforest and over dramatic cliffs you can take your pick of swimming, trekking, picnicking or bike riding. Its less than an hour's drive from central Sydney.

The Blue Mountains National Park offers a spectacular natural playground just 1.5 hours from Sydney.

The animal lovers also have something to do too - Taronga Zoo is a short ferry ride from Circular Quay. Its a harbour hillside zoo with million-dollar harbour views.

Or there is Wild Life Sydney Zoo, which has a large collection of Australian native reptiles, butterflies, spiders, snakes and mammals.  Sea Life Sydney Aquarium has a large variety of Australian aquatic life, displaying more than 700 species.

Something different

Luna Park is a restored old-fashioned amusement park overlooking Sydney Harbour. The clown entrance is one of several features of this park that opened in 1935 along with The Wild Mouse rollercoaster, Ferris Wheel and the Magic Castle.

Like a bit of a party? Every year sees the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras which is a two-week cultural and entertainment festival culminating in the world-famous massive parade and party on the first Saturday in March.

Rugby league fanatics consider the State of Origin Series - three matches between Queensland and NSW (held in May, June and July) to be the pinnacle of the game.  This is just one of the many annual events held in Sydney, as, there are festivals year round for almost every occasion.
